Japan sees a long spell of rainy weather from June to July known as tsuyu. This type of rainy
season is specific to Japan, the Korean Peninsula, Taiwan, and the coastal area throughout southern China.
Since ancient times, the Japanese have come up with various ways to spend these unpleasantly humid months in comfort.
LUMINE offers perks that are exclusive to rainy days at LUMINE Yurakucho, LUMINE Ogikubo and Ofuna LUMINE WING.
The perks offered on rainy days at the 30 stores within LUMINE Yurakucho include bonus points on membership cards
and free waterproof spray to use on purchased products.
At ”BEAMS”, the label that has several stores including some within LUMINE, designer Yuko Ibe’s accessories brand
“Bon Bon Store” opened as a pop-up store. Featured in the pop-up store, are colorful umbrellas with designs such
as African batik prints that are sure to transform gloomy rainy days.
Many apparel brands are also taking on rain products with newly-developed materials. Sanyo Shokai’s “MACKINTOSH
PHILOSOPHY”, a brand offered through some LUMINE locations, has recently added on to their rainy season line-up.
In addition to the essential rain coats and rain boots, they offer waterproof dresses and skirts. The feminine
dresses with flower prints are 100% polyester, making them water-repellent and machine washable. Perfect for any
day rain or shine, these pieces are extremely versatile.
Tokyo’s popular “beautiful people”, a brand that has participated in Paris Fashion Week from 2017 AW season, offers
military rain jackets and tote bags made from water-repellent materials. The military jackets designed with slits
under the armholes similar to kimonos are available in five colors; green, purple, black saxe blue and pink (saxe
blue and pink exclusive to retail stores). The tote bags offered in big and middle sizes, come in three colors;
white, saxe blue and black. These items that mix Japanese and western designs set them apart from other rainwear
that often lack distinctiveness.
If you ever visit the country during rainy season, remember that it is a great time to find rainwear that you will
only find in Japan.
